Sun Kissed Beach Shoot

Tuesday, February 19, 2019 | By: Gwen Hernandez

With the sun beaming down and the wind blowing your hair, what could be more relaxing than a day on the beach. That was my thought when I noticed the weather was going to be perfect. I headed to coastline of North Carolina Wilmington beach. I totally love Wilmington and all it has to offer. I decided to do a photoshoot that expressed the feeling of the day. The number one important thing for me when I do a shoot is to make sure my client has a great time. I want it to be an experience not just a session or photoshoot.

I want to bring you on my journey to capture our wonderful day on the beach. We actually went on a farm as well and had a blast with the horses. I will talk more about that later. We started the morning at the Kreashanz Salon where Noelle did a fantastic job with Lynley's hair and Jacey did just as amazing on her makeup. We wanted a little makeup but for it to look a natural as possible. Needless to say, Lynley felt pampered. I totally love doing all day shoots with my clients because it gives us plenty of time to relax and enjoy the day and get great photographs.

After having fun with hair and makeup, we headed to Fort Fisher State Recreational area. What a lovely place that was! We took a few portraits under the beautiful trees. The sun was kissing her face so beautifully, I just had to capture it. In these types of areas it can be difficult to get the right amount of light to come through the trees to give this effect. It didn't take us long to find the right spot and start clicking. It turned out very lovely. She was so relaxed sitting there. This day was definitely starting off great. This sun kissing photoshoot was coming to life.

We then headed over to the beach location of Fort Fisher. There was so many beautiful areas we could use, but there was still debris from the hurricane a few months back so we had to be careful. The rocks made it a little difficult to get to the beach area, but they were very pretty for the background. The water was very cold at that time. The dress we used was one I bought from Altar'd State Clothing store. I actually went on a shopping spree for this shoot and fell in love with this dress. I instantly knew I wanted to do a shoot with it. I imagined what it would look like on my client with the sun kissing her face on the beach. I was right it looked as I had envisioned.

We had tons of fun shooting in that location but with the sun creeping up in the sky at noonish, we decided to head for the ranch and visit the horses. At the ranch we could get in some shade and enjoy the nice breeze. We stopped and ate lunch to replenish ourselves, before getting to the ranch. The ranch was very nice and the horses were very large, but well taken care of. I'm a horse lover so this shoot was right up my ally. I was so ready to capture the beauty of the horses and the ranch itself. I would liked to of had a nice glass of ice tea though. I'm from Texas and we love some ice tea. I wish you could hear my accent, it's hilarious. I sound like I just jumped off a horse and came from the backwoods. LOL..Even people in Texas made fun of my country accent. Anyways, back to the shoot, lol..The horse was not happy that he was not the main subject in the picture. He kept getting in front of Lynley. It was pretty funny. Here are just a few of the portraits we got at the ranch.

After relaxing at the ranch and playing with the horses we headed off to Figure 8 Island. This is a private island off the coast of North Carolina. The beach was completely empty so we had the beach all to ourselves. We decided to test out the temp of the water. Yep, it was still very cold, but we bared it anyways. We did a shoot in the dress in the water and with the sun kissing her face. It was so much fun but cold. We both had to get in the water, after a few minutes we got use to the temp. There is nothing like the feeling of the waves hitting you feet and the sound of the waves crashing onto the beach. I could have stayed all day. On this shoot, I chose to let the sun be a big part of the portraits to show that even though the sun is bright and high in the sky you can still get great portraits using it. The glow from the sun can make for wonderful portraits.

We had to hang the dress out to dry. While it was drying, we did a few other portraits with different outfits to wrap up the day. It was about 4:30 and we had so much fun already. We wanted to utilize the sun still and just capture the feeling of simply having fun on the beach. The water was pretty calm. We walked around and explored the beach a little and took a few more portraits. This beach was amazing for relaxing. Me and my assistant enjoyed this beach so much.

The entire day was full of fun and laughter. We were ready to hit the road back home.

After a whole day of laughter and fun we were hungry. We stopped and grab something to eat on our journey back home. I was so happy about how the day went and happy that I got to spend some time on the beach. I really enjoy doing portraits on the beach.

Thank you for coming along on my journey and please subscribe to my site to see more journeys and shoots like this one. I am very adventuriuous and I am always looking for new places to explore. If you know any locations you think I should explore, let me know. I would love to check it out.
